County Assessor

The County Assessor is an appointed position, hired by the County Commissioners with the approval of the Department of Revenue. The designation of Senior Accredited Minnesota Assessor (SAMA) is a requirement. The County Assessor is administratively responsible for the overall planning, coordination, supervision and organization of the Assessor's Office for the purpose of estimating the market value and the classification of all property. The application of this information provides for the uniform distribution of property tax levies among County taxpayers

Services and Responsibilties

The County Assessor's Office is responsible for estimating the market value and determining the legislative classification of all property in Houston County for real estate tax purposes.

Each Township and City is assessed by the County Assessor's Office. The Assessor's Office staff will physically view property at the minimum of every fourth year, but will revalue property each year based on a formula established by the County Assessor. However, the Minnesota Department of Revenue dictates specific aspects of that formula.  The Assessor's Office also classifies each parcel, based on it’s use, each year.
